Not only diabetics have problems with blood sugar fluctuations. Those who are sensitive to sudden drops in blood sugar can experience circulatory problems and fainting spells or even lose consciousness for a short time.
This helps to keep sugar and insulin levels constant:
- Dairy products. Drink or eat about 200ml of low-fat dairy products at least twice a day, such as yoghurt, milk, drinking yoghurt, kefir or buttermilk. The lactose, proteins and fats contained in milk improve blood sugar levels by slowing down the conversion of sugar into blood sugar.
- Bread. Eat less white flour products, but wholemeal bread or mixed bread with at least 3g fibre. Complex carbohydrates slow down the absorption of glucose and thus reduce strong fluctuations in insulin production.
- Green vegetables. Green vegetables such as spinach contain magnesium. Magnesium protects against type 2 diabetes. Other sources of magnesium are avocados, nuts, fish and green leafy vegetables.
- Cinnamon. Cinnamon lowers blood sugar levels by around 20%, depending on how much is consumed. Sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon on your coffee, tea, yoghurt or muesli.
- Buckwheat. Eat buckwheat once a week, e.g. in the form of pasta. Buckwheat lowers the blood sugar level by 10 to 20 % and contains a lot of fibre, which helps to stabilise the blood sugar level.
