How to reduce cell damage from X-ray irradiation

X-rays are important for making diagnoses, but the radiation treatment damages the DNA. If the DNA is damaged, the resulting damage can be passed on to new cells during cell division and cancer cells can develop.


However, an occasional X-ray examination is not a bad thing, as the body repairs minor damage itself. Nevertheless, it is advantageous, if possible, to limit the damage caused by radiotherapy.
To significantly reduce radiation damage caused by X-rays, it is recommended to eat foods rich in antioxidants 5 days before the X-ray. Vitamin C, glutathione and uric acid are particularly effective antioxidants. The intake of antioxidants reduces cell damage caused by X-rays by up to 50%.

Foods containing vitamin C: oranges, orange juice, tomatoes, kiwi, pineapple, apricots, peas, strawberries, peppers, broccoli.

Foods containing uric acid: baker's yeast (1810 mg/100g), porcini mushrooms (488mg/100g), oil sardines (480mg/100g), tuna (290mg/100g), matjes herring (219mg/100g), chicken breast (175mg/100g), dried soya beans (190mg/100g).

Foods that stimulate glutathione production in the body: Avocado, asparagus, broccoli, garlic, raw eggs, spinach, tomatoes.
