How healthy is whisky?

Whisky

Whisky is one of the healthiest types of alcohol. Drunk in moderation, of course, whisky is less likely to cause a hangover, and it's even really healthy! According to research, a few pints of whisky a week have these health benefits:

Good for the heart

Alongside red wine and dark beer, whisky strengthens the heart as it reduces the risk of blood clotting and therefore the risk of a heart attack. Whisky contains antioxidants that stimulate good cholesterol and counteract bad cholesterol.

Fights cancer

The antioxidant ellagic acid, which is abundant in whisky, fights carcinogenic substances. It also protects the body during chemotherapy.

Reduces the risk of stroke

As already mentioned, whisky prevents the accumulation of too much cholesterol in the blood and even helps to break down the bad cholesterol. The artery walls relax due to the alcohol, allowing blood to circulate freely. This means that the risk of a stroke is significantly reduced by drinking (a little) whisky regularly.

Improves the brain

According to a 2003 study, whisky has been shown to counteract Alzheimer's and dementia. The antioxidants in whisky promote brain activity and thus increase memory. Whisky keeps the brain young and active.

Reduces weight gain

With around 200 calories per 100ml of whisky, whisky is one of the lower-calorie drinks, especially if you don't drink more than two fingerfuls. Unlike cocktails, beer and wine, whisky is low in sugar. As the metabolism is stimulated by whisky, the body burns the calories consumed even better, which is why whisky is particularly good to enjoy after a full meal.

Combats stress

Whisky calms the nerves and relaxes, thus counteracting stress. The increased blood circulation caused by the alcohol allows more oxygen to reach the organs so that the body can cope better with stress.

Supports digestion

Whisky aids digestion and is therefore well suited as a stomach liqueur after a meal. Drinking whisky "closes" the stomach, i.e. prevents unnecessary overeating.

Good for diabetics

Whisky has no carbohydrates and can therefore be consumed in moderation by diabetics. A quantity of one to a maximum of two fingerbreadths is recommended.
