The older a person gets, the more information the brain has to memorise. So it is only natural that an older person has more difficulty memorising things than a younger person. However, everyone can do a lot to keep their memory and brain capacity fit into old age.
In addition to memory exercises, sufficient sleep, a vitamin-rich diet and memory-enhancing agents help to combat memory impairment.
What remedies counteract memory weaknesses?
Choline and gingko. Choline is similar to B vitamins and can be produced in the liver. Choline is found in animal liver, muscle meat, fish, nuts, beans, peas, spinach, wheat germ and eggs. The substance is very important for the central nervous system in the body and is effective against memory disorders, memory loss, dementia, schizophrenia, chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and depression. Cholie also has a preventive effect against cancer, lowers cholesterol and reduces swelling in the airways in asthma.
An average diet usually contains between 200 and 600mg of choline per day. Adult men and breastfeeding women should get 550mg, pregnant and non-pregnant women 425 to 450mg, children from 1 to 3 years 200mg, from 4 to 8 years 250mg, from 9 to 13 years 375mg of choline per day. For adults, taking up to 3.5g of choline per day is considered safe.
Gingko is an herb from whose leaves extracts are taken for medicinal purposes. Gingko is recommended for all forms of memory impairment, especially in older people. Gingko also helps with ringing in the ears, dizziness, poor concentration and hearing loss.
Gingko stimulates blood circulation and thus improves the function of the brain, eyes, ears and limbs.
Gingko leaf extract is considered safe. However, gingko should not be taken immediately after an operation, during pregnancy and breastfeeding or if you suffer from haemophilia. Diabetics should pay particular attention to fluctuations in blood sugar levels when taking gingko. Gingko seeds should never be taken by children.
Gingko can slow down blood clotting and should therefore not be taken at the same time as ibuprofen or other anticoagulants.
For improving brain function in healthy adults, the dosage is 120 to 600mg of gingko extract per day.
