Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), also known colloquially as fidget spinner syndrome, is one of the most controversial disorders today. There are many theories, unanswered questions and few treatments for ADHD. Instead of medication, feeding a hyperactive child is a good place to start.

Protein and carbohydrates

A child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder should be given a diet low in refined sugar and refined flour. Instead, protein-rich and high-fibre foods should be given. Some ADHD symptoms are eliminated by stabilising blood sugar levels. Colourful vegetables (carrots, peppers, spinach, corn, etc.), lean chicken and wholegrain products (wholemeal bread, pasta, rice) should be included in the daily diet.

Tip: To slowly wean the child off sugary foods, you can gradually replace part of the usual meal. For example, start by mixing a handful of wholemeal muesli with a maximum of 2% sugar into the breakfast cereal so that the child gets used to the new flavour. Gradually reduce the amount of sugar in the cereal mix.

Iron-rich food

Iron is important for regulating dopamine levels. Low dopamine levels cause poor concentration and reduce mental capacity. About 10mg of iron per day should be administered with the diet.

Beef is very high in iron, to be on the safe side get organic beef, as some chemicals used in the processing of beef increase the symptoms of ADHD. Almonds and pumpkin seeds are also suitable for an iron-rich diet. About 50g of almonds and 2 spoons of pumpkin seeds already provide half of the required iron.

Omega-3 fatty acids

A deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids is associated with various developmental and psychological disorders. These include autism and depression as well as ADHD. Often the metabolism of a child with hyperactivity disorders cannot process the intake of omega-3 acids properly. This also explains why boys are more likely to have ADHD symptoms than girls, as the female hormone oestrogen preserves essential fats in the body, while the male hormone testosterone has the opposite effect. Fish, eggs and nuts should be served to ensure a sufficient intake of healthy fats.
