Drinking seawater in small quantities, i.e. less than one litre a day and in small amounts at a time, is not necessarily harmful as long as the body gradually becomes accustomed to it. Larger quantities of salt water lead to internal dehydration and can be fatal. The salts contained in seawater dehydrate the body's cells so that the body can no longer function properly. The kidneys in particular suffer from the dehydration and this results in kidney failure.
In addition to the salts, seawater contains bacteria that can make the body ill.

Fresh water is necessary for the proper functioning of the organs and regulates the body temperature.
