What to eat with stomach flu

Toast in the toaster

Stomach flu äuThis manifests itself in nausea and vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach and intestinal cramps. Much of what is put into the stomach causes cramps again and comes out again, because the stomach can only tolerate certain foods. To regain strength, it is important to give the body food that the stomach can cope with.

Liquids

About two hours after the last vomiting, the stomach has usually calmed down enough to hold clear liquids. Diarrhoea and vomiting cause the body to lose fluids, which must be replaced to avoid dehydration. Water, herbal tea, broth or isotonic drinks are well tolerated. Milk drinks should be avoided for the duration of the stomach flu.

Solid food

With stomach flu, it is better not to eat solid food for a few days while the stomach contents are coming out. Whilst fluid intake is very important, solid food can be avoided for the peak of the illness. This will give the stomach time to recover and avoid unnecessary strain, and you can usually listen to your natural hunger. When a healthy hunger sets in, the stomach is usually ready to take in food. However, during the recovery phase you must switch to a light diet. The first foods after the stomach flu should be soft, with natural sugars and carbohydrates. The BRAT diet, consisting of banana, rice, apple sauce and toast, is particularly good.

Apples can be eaten as cooked apple sauce or grated raw apple, rice as lightly salted white rice or rice crackers. Instead of toast, savoury sticks, crackers (Ritz) or pretzels are suitable. If this food remains in the body, you can try chicken soup, noodle soup or rice with boiled chicken. Eating soup provides solid food and liquid at the same time.
