Scotch is one of the most widely consumed alcoholic beverages of all time. After all, Scotch has been around for centuries. But what are the roots of this popular drink?

As the name suggests, Scotch was originally produced in Scotland by the monk John Cor. Scotch became popular after the introduction of distillation by Scottish monks in 1494.

 

To the dismay of all Scotch and other whisky lovers, whisky was taxed for the first time in 1644. The introduction of the whisky tax suddenly increased the number of smugglers illegally producing and selling Scotch whisky.

In 1823, the Scottish Parliament made it easier to obtain a distillery licence and made it more difficult for illegal whisky producers to make a profit. This marked the beginning of the modern production of Scotch whisky.

 

Nowadays, the production of fine Scotch whisky is much more advanced in terms of technology. The technology is necessary to meet the demand for the popular drink. However, fine Scotch whisky is still produced in Scotland and whisky produced in other countries is not allowed to carry the name Scotch.
