Living with the bossy mother

When the mother wants to rule your life

Teenagers

Some mothers are bossy and dominant by nature. They want the best for their children and take the right to make decisions about their lives. Often living with a dominant mother leads to conflict and resentment. Learn to live with your mother's less pleasant traits so that you can appreciate her good qualities.

Remember that there are reasons why your mother has a bossy personality and that you cannot change her. So you have to learn to deal with the way she is. What you should do immediately is to set clear boundaries for her. You decide which areas of your life you don't want to share with your mother. If she crosses that line, remind her.

Learn to understand your mother. She wants to share her own life experience with you. Unfortunately, she does this in a way that does not allow you to learn from your own mistakes. So don't get angry when she tries to tell you what to do, but tell her clearly that you want to make your own decisions.

You must tell (or write, if that is easier) your mother how you and she want the relationship to go. Listen to what she has to say, but insist that the final decision is yours alone, because it is your life. Don't forget to thank your mother for her suggestions before you change the subject and talk about trivial things.

Your goal should be to justify a decision to yourself, not to your mother. So do not act out of spite, but consider the consequences. Sometimes your mother is certainly right in her suggestions, but you alone should decide whether to accept them or not.
If your mother wants to tell you what to do, don't let it bother you. You are in the process of becoming an independent person, which includes building your self-esteem.

Mothers with control issues get worse when they are neglected. So rather volunteer with her so that she doesn't run after you. Learn to appreciate that your mother cares about you. But don't let her make you feel guilty if you go against her wishes. Everyone has the right to live their own life guilt-free.

Often you get the feeling that your mother is trying to live her own life by controlling yours. Don't let that influence you. Even if that is the case, it is up to her to live with it, not you. If your relationship with your mother suffers greatly from the need to control, you can try family therapy. After all, you only have one mother and it is always a pity when such a relationship dies. Even if it seems unlikely, your mother is only doing this because she wants to protect you, so try to build a good relationship with her.
