What to do if you have digestive problems during pregnancy

Yoghurt and fibre

From the 21st week onwards, digestive problems are very common during pregnancy. The symptoms usually manifest as heartburn, stomach pressure and constipation.

The larger the uterus becomes, the more pressure it begins to exert on the digestive organs. The stomach capacity is significantly reduced and the entire digestive system slows down. As a result, food stays in the stomach longer and can feel like a heavy lump. This can even lead to persistent stomach pain and back pain.

The valve between the oesophagus and stomach no longer works with the same efficiency as usual, so that sometimes the stomach acid rises again and causes heartburn. As long as the symptoms last a few hours at most, there is no cause for concern. There are ways to reduce the discomfort:

Relief for heartburn

It is better to eat smaller meals more often than three main meals. Avoid particularly fatty, heavy, strongly flavoured or pickled foods.

Drink a glass of milk or eat a natural yoghurt before meals and before going to bed. The lactic acid helps to neutralise stomach acid.

Sit upright while eating to reduce pressure on the stomach.

Do not lie down immediately after eating, wait at least an hour. Elevate the upper body with several pillows at night.

If symptoms persist for a long time or are very severe, ask your doctor for advice.

The slower digestion and increased fluid requirements during pregnancy can lead to constipation, making you feel irritable and sluggish. The following measures can help against constipation.

Relief for constipation

Eat a high-fibre diet, plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables and wholemeal products.

Increase your fluid intake, at least 2 litres a day. Drink mainly water.

Exercise regularly, go for an hour's walk a day.

The same applies to constipation: eat smaller meals more often during the day to avoid overloading the stomach.

Eat probiotic natural yoghurt at least twice a day.
