Many women often feel nauseous, from mild discomfort to severe vomiting, especially during the first trimester. If you suffer from morning sickness, try the following remedies to settle your stomach. However, as every pregnancy is different and hormones are unpredictable during pregnancy, there is unfortunately no guarantee that the nausea will go away.
This way you can fight your nausea:
Drink tea. A cup of ginger tea can work wonders. Ginger is known for its stomach-soothing properties. Ginger tea is available in well-stocked supermarkets or health food shops. If it is not available as a tea, you can get the ginger root and grate half a teaspoon of it. Infuse the grated ginger root in very hot water for 5 minutes, then strain. Other teas that are good for you are camomile tea, peppermint and lemon balm. If you suffer from heartburn, avoid peppermint tea. Ginger tea works best if you drink it straight after getting up in the morning, before you feel nauseous.
Ginger ale. Drink slightly stale ginger ale at room temperature between drinks. Although ginger ale does not contain much ginger, it usually works very well against morning sickness. However, leave out most of the carbon dioxide as this stimulates stomach acid production.
Pressure on the wrists. There is a pressure point about 4cm from the ball of the hand and exactly in the centre between the ligaments. If you apply pressure to this point with your thumb for 10 seconds, release your thumb and repeat the process for a while, the nausea may also go away. There are special medical wristbands that apply pressure to this point and are used for nausea and motion sickness.
Vitamin B supplements. Taking 25mg of vitamin B6 three times a day can significantly alleviate nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. However, talk to your gynaecologist about this beforehand to be on the safe side.
Drink plenty of fluids. Water is the best medicine. Some women swear that they drink a glass of room temperature water every hour and suffer much less morning sickness. Every time you get up in the night to go to the bathroom, drink a glass of water to get a better start in the morning. You can tell by the colour of your urine whether you are drinking enough fluids. If your urine is almost like water, you are drinking enough, but if it is a dark yellow colour, you should drink more fluids.
If your stomach doesn't want to hold anything, try a fruity water ice. The water ice will give you a little energy from the sugar and fluids you lose through vomiting.
