Newborn babies are not yet able to grasp, but still need stimulation from the right toys. A baby up to three months usually likes anything that is interesting to look at and makes sounds. In the first few months of life, babies are particularly stimulated by looking and listening.

 

The baby's vision is still blurred and its gaze is fixed on things that are about 30 to 40cm away from its eyes. A baby of this age reacts to human faces, but also to drawings and pictures with faces. Due to the blurred vision, the baby relies particularly on differences in contrast in the first few months and therefore reacts more intensively to black and white contrasts and very bright colours.

Slowly moving objects in front of the eyes with soft sounds are easier for the baby to perceive than stationary objects.

 

Toys for the newborn baby

 

Musical toys: Music is one of the best ways to entertain and soothe your baby. Music boxes with music or simply small stereo systems with nursery rhymes are suitable.

Mobile: Mobiles stimulate spatial vision. High-contrast mobiles that move in circles are best.

Mirror: Babies are fascinated by their reflection in the mirror, even if they don't realise that they are seeing themselves. The baby moves and its reflection moves too. It is best to hang a small mirror in the cot on the side next to the baby's face.

Soft books: Soft fabric books with high-contrast patterns that crackle when touched magically attract baby's attention and encourage him to play. By touching them, they learn about different surface textures.

Interactive toys: Baby toys that squeak, ring or make other noises when the baby touches them will be fun for many months to come. It learns to cause reactions through its own actions.

Rattles: Soft and light rattles can be attached to baby's feet so that they rattle as soon as they move their legs.

Wind chimes: Babies like soft and gentle sounds. A wind chime can be hung in the baby's line of sight so that they can watch the movement in the wind and listen to the sounds. Wind chimes are good for gently lulling a baby to sleep.
