Even if every generation of parents is fundamentally different from the last, all parents are the same in one respect: there are certain expressions that all parents seem to use towards their (young) children. These expressions are probably often used to avoid having to say what they actually mean. 

1. maybe.

Translation: I'll probably give you what you want, but then when I want it.

2 Oh, look there!

Translation: I want to distract you so we don't have to discuss it anymore.

(Unfortunately, this only works until the child is 4)

3. wait until your father/mother comes home.

Translation: I have no more strength, let the other parent take care of it.

4. if you love me, ...

Translation: My last resort to decide the parent-child war in my favour.

5. therefore.

Translation. I don't know it myself or don't feel like explaining it.

6. one day you will understand why you are being punished.

Translation: Because that's what my mum used to say to me...

7 I'm about to give you a reason to cry.

Translation: I no longer have any pedagogically useful means, so I try threatening.

8. quiet, I have to concentrate.

Translation: Why don't you let me finish my novel?

9 You're still too small for that.

Translation: I have no idea how to explain this, let's save it for later.

10. one more time and I will...

Translation: I really hope you'll stop now, otherwise I'll have to make good on my threat so as not to lose face.
