After a minor accident, should a baby go to sleep immediately after a fall? Many parents believe that a baby or toddler must be kept awake after a fall on the head to avoid the risk of coma. Whether to keep the baby awake depends mainly on the severity of the fall. In fact, it is restful for many babies if they can take a nap after a traumatic experience such as a fall.

Should you put a baby to sleep immediately after a fall?
If it is a fall from a greater height or a serious collision, parents should definitely talk to a doctor and clarify the exact background and symptoms. Serious symptoms after a fall are unconsciousness, excessive crying, vomiting, lethargy, breathing difficulties and change in facial colour. If the child shows such symptoms and does not react or hardly reacts to the parents' voice, he or she may have suffered a concussion and needs to see a doctor. Brain haemorrhages can also occur, which can be life-threatening.
For normal falls, i.e. falling down while practising walking, falling off a chair or bumping heads at the table, it is only advisable for the parents to observe the child for a while for any symptoms. It is not dangerous to let the baby fall asleep during such falls, but sleeping makes it difficult to observe the child for symptoms of concussion.
For observation purposes, it may be advisable to wake the baby from time to time during the first two nights after a fall. If it reacts normally when waking up, you can let it continue to sleep.
If the baby appears excessively apathetic or has changed in any way that causes concern, there is no harm in having him or her examined by a doctor. If the child cannot be woken from sleep, he/she must be taken to the emergency doctor immediately.
The first symptoms may only appear hours after the fall. If the baby starts vomiting several hours after a serious fall, this is most likely a consequence of the fall and must be taken very seriously.
Small children and babies need a lot of sleep, which is why in most cases it is almost impossible to prevent the child from falling asleep. It is a good idea for a parent to sleep with the child so that they can watch for any symptoms and wake them up for a check in between.
