The watermelon (Citrullus Lanatus) is a unique fruit from southern Africa. An interesting fact about the watermelon is that the fruit has a gender.

 

There are male and female watermelons. In general, the female watermelon is larger and sweeter and has fewer seeds. The sex of the fruit can be determined by looking at the underside. The male watermelon has a small ring about the size of a penny, while the female watermelon has a larger ring. So if you prefer sweeter melons with fewer seeds, you should look for a female fruit.

Watermelons come in many sizes. According to the 1998 Guinness Book of Records, the largest watermelon weighed 119 kilograms.

All parts of the watermelon are edible, including the seeds and rind. In China, the largest producer of watermelons today, the rind is fried and eaten.
