Soya is known to be very healthy and fights many diseases. Unfortunately, soya has a reputation for having a neutral flavour and is therefore avoided by meat lovers. But soya can be made extremely palatable. What many people don't realise: Meat on its own has a fairly neutral flavour, its popular aroma comes from the spices used in its preparation. The same applies to soya, it tastes at least as delicious when seasoned well!
What is soya good for
Soya lowers cholesterol levels, protects against cancer and helps against hot flushes. Soya is therefore recommended as a main component of the diet. If you have no problems with cholesterol, you only need to eat soya occasionally; people with slightly elevated cholesterol levels should consume around 25g of soya protein per day.
Women with menopausal problems are recommended to eat 10g of soya protein twice a day.
There are two ways to add soya to your diet. You can "hide" soya products in your meals so that they are not noticed among the other ingredients, or you can make the soya products tasty by adding refined flavourings. Particularly tasty soya products that you can buy ready-made are soya milk with flavour (chocolate or strawberry), breakfast cereals with soya, ready-made soya burgers or energy bars with soya. If you are not a convinced soya lover but would like to integrate soya products into your diet for health reasons, you should know the following: You get the health benefits of soya almost exclusively from soya foods, as they naturally contain isoflavins. Soya in tablet form or soya sauce does not contain isoflavins.
Tip for hamburger lovers: Prepare a hamburger in the usual way with lettuce, tomato, possibly cheese, mayonnaise and ketchup and replace the meat burger with a ready-bought soya burger. Even 'die-hard' meat lovers will probably not even notice the difference.
