Fast food is not a complete diet, but if you have to sometimes, you can choose less unhealthy meals. This way you can enjoy fast food from time to time without a guilty conscience.
You won't find many decent vegetable dishes in fast food restaurants, but at least you can eat less high-fat and lower-calorie food by ordering grilled sandwiches, salads, vegetarian burgers, soups and low-fat desserts, for example.
General rules for healthier eating in fast food restaurants
Grilled food
Grilled is better than fried because less fat is used. When frying or deep-frying, the food absorbs the fat and thus drastically increases the amount of calories.
Simple hamburgers
Order either plain burgers or vegetarian burgers. Stay away from double burgers and cheese burgers. A single hamburger has around 350 calories, while a double hamburger with cheese has over 1000 calories!
Menus may be cheaper, but not healthier. It's better to order individually so that you order water, juice or low-fat milk instead of cola or lemonade and skip the fries. If fries, then please order the small portion.
Try a salad, but without cheese or bacon, better with chicken. Instead of heavy mayonnaise, use vinaigrette as a dressing.
If available, order a yoghurt for dessert, not ice cream or an apple turnover.
Simply say no
Avoid extras with lots of calories and simply say no when they are offered to you. What you should avoid in fast food restaurants are: French fries, chicken nuggets, onion rings, extra sauces, bacon, mayonnaise, double burgers, cheeseburgers, extra cheese. If you avoid these calorie bombs, you can eat fast food occasionally.
