A .rar file is a format that compresses computer files so that they take up less space on the hard drive. The .rar files can be divided into equal parts for archiving and they can also be password protected. A .rar file is normally used on a PC, to open it on a Macintosh you need special software.

 

To open .rar files, they must be decompressed using unpacker software. Rar files are quite popular with Windows users, usually WinRar or 7zip is used for decompression, but you can also open a rar file on a Mac.

For Mac with operating system X 10.0 and higher, we recommend the software "StuffIt" (Stuffit), which you can download free of charge, for example at http://stuffit-standard-edition.softonic.de/mac can download. StuffIt is used to decompress rar files on the Mac. StuffIt is also used to open other types of compressed files.

 

You can also download a decompression tool like UnrarX or a RAR unpacker software which is available for Mac OS X.

To open the files, drag and drop them onto the icon of the decompression software. The software will then automatically decompress the files so that you can edit them.
