Computers have revolutionised schools, universities and other educational institutions. More and more technology is entering the classroom. Despite the undeniable advantages for education, there are still some disadvantages to consider, as some teaching methods cannot be replaced by computers.
The technology available today has greatly improved access to knowledge and education. The more and easier the access to knowledge, the faster and more effectively pupils and students can learn. Information is available for every type of learner. More or less gifted pupils can find material that is useful to them. This is not just about the Internet, but about all technological learning tools.
The older generation is often opposed to technology. A good example of this is the calculator: while older people reject the benefits of calculators because they have learnt mental arithmetic, it is hard to deny that using a calculator speeds up the completion of complicated calculations and gives the student more time for more important things.
Nevertheless, it must be mentioned that computerisation can affect the ability for fruitful communication between teacher and student. In addition to learning success, technology can hinder the ability to resolve conflicts and social behaviour.
Technology has made it possible for education to no longer be a privilege. Any information can be found on the internet without discrimination. With the reduction in the cost of technology, people from all walks of life are able to use computers in most countries.
Nevertheless, there are households where a child does not have access to a computer or the internet. As a result, such a child can easily fall behind their classmates and be at a disadvantage in their future education. The pressure to own and be able to use a computer is increasing.
Is it really better that our children are more at home on the computer than in real life? And how is it that pupils can talk to people on the other side of the world via instant messaging while ignoring their immediate social environment?
Technology can and should enrich traditional teaching methods, but humanity must not be lost in the process. It is important for parents to find the middle ground. A child today needs to be able to use computers and other technological devices to be successful, but should also spend as much time playing ball in the fresh air with children of their own age group. Neither extreme is advisable, technology should not be rejected or shunned, but human interaction must be cultivated.
It should not be forgotten that the quality of learning in the classroom depends less on the technology available than on the quality of the teacher and their teaching methods.
