The art of concentration is not allowing yourself to be distracted and focussing your full attention on your task.

Many students make the mistake of reading through entire texts without taking in what they have read. Afterwards, they have no idea what the text was about. The same applies to listening in class.

Tips for learning to concentrate

A consistent and well-organised schedule is important. If possible, always study at the same time of day and stick to the plan. Write down the study time so that you don't "forget" it.

Always study in a quiet environment. Find a place where there are as few distractions as possible. If necessary, go to the public library to study if you don't have a quiet place at home.

Take short breaks in between, but only at set times. Use the breaks to get some fresh air or walk around a bit. Eat a snack and get back to work. Ideally, you should take a 10-minute break every hour.

Every pupil and student suffers from daydreaming while studying. To prevent your mind from wandering, ask yourself questions about what you've learnt from time to time. This will keep your brain focussed.

If you have difficulty concentrating in class, take notes on the material during the lesson. Read through these notes before the next lesson so that you are already mentally prepared for the topic. Use the 5-minute break to walk around a little and stimulate your circulation. Sit up straight in your chair and show interest in the subject. Sit as far forward as possible so that you are less distracted by classmates.

With a few but constant changes to your study habits, you will improve your ability to concentrate enormously, and with it your grades.
