There are women with beard-like facial hair. This is known as a lady's beard or hirsutism.
How does a lady's beard actually develop?
A lady's beard is caused by an excess of male hormones in the female body.
This excess of male hormones is caused by a disturbance in the hormonal balance when the male hormones are released to an increased extent.
There are several possible causes for such a hormonal imbalance, such as
- A disease in which the adrenal glands or ovaries produce increased amounts of androgens
- Taking medication containing cortisone
