What structure does your hair have

Beautiful hair

In addition to hair colour and length, the structure of the hair determines the appearance of the hair. Hair texture refers to shape and coarseness. In order to get the best possible care for the hair, it is important to determine the hair structure. The hair texture determines how the hair feels and how the strands are shaped.

The two important factors in determining hair structure are the size and shape of the hair follicles. Although individual hair strands have their own follicles, the general size and shape of all follicles is usually the same. Round, symmetrical follicles usually belong to straight hair. Longer follicles make the hair wavy or curly. Larger follicles make the hair thicker, while smaller follicles make the hair finer. The hair texture can be any combination depending on the shape and size of the follicles.

Fine hair

Fine hair is characterised by thin strands. Most fine hair is straight, but there is also wavy, fine hair. In addition to the diameter of the strand and the shape of the cuticle, fine hair can also have a smaller or completely absent medulla. The medulla is the innermost structural layer in all hair. Fine hair is usually easy to style, but the hair is easily damaged by chemical treatments such as bleaching, colouring or waving.

Thick hair

Thick hair is often wiry or curly, but straight hair can also have a thick texture. Thick hair is less easy to tame and styling it often makes it frizzy. Colouring or straightening thick hair can also be difficult. Deep conditioner treatments are useful for thick hair. The conditioner moisturises the hair and reduces split ends.

Mixed hair structure

This structural form has the characteristics of fine and thick hair. This hair structure is also referred to as "normal" hair, as it is the most common type. Normal hair is thicker than fine hair and has the medulla that fine hair often lacks, but the strands are less thick than in thick hair. Normal hair can be straight or wavy and is easy to style. Normal hair is less sensitive and responds well to chemical treatments.
