Pimples and acne do not only occur in young people. Many women between the ages of 25 and 45 also struggle with skin blemishes.
Inflamed pimples in the T-zone (forehead, cheeks and chin), enlarged pores, blackheads and oily skin can be a serious problem for self-confidence. So-called late acne (acne tarda) can be triggered by various causes.
Causes of spots
Hormones
The fluctuating hormone balance before the next period can cause the skin to produce more sebum and cause pimples. The hormone balance also changes when you stop taking the contraceptive pill or certain medications such as cortisone, antiepileptics and antidepressants, and this can promote the appearance of spots.
Stress
Anger, overwork and relationship problems have a negative effect on the skin. Stress releases messenger substances in the body that promote acne.
Nutrition
Many carbohydrates with a glycaemic index such as white bread, sweets and soft drinks worsen the appearance of the skin and promote acne.
Lifestyle habits
Smoking and obesity promote the clogging of pores and the growth of blackheads.
Incorrect skin care
Women often treat their facial skin with the wrong skincare cream. Small wrinkles cause them to use greasy creams. However, greasy creams clog the sebaceous glands.
Alkaline soaps are also bad as they change the pH value of the skin and thus create a favourable skin climate for acne-promoting bacteria.
