Bathing dries out the skin and make-up causes acne. These are just two of the best-known old wives' tales about beauty care. We'll tell you the 10 most common cosmetic myths and tell you what's true.
Make-up causes spots
Compact make-up is said to clog the pores of the facial skin and thus promote the formation of blackheads. This was the case a long time ago when compact powder was still made from rice starch, which could swell up and clog pores. Nowadays, make-up powder is made from skin-conditioning substances and contains minerals, talcum, natural silicates and ground silk. These substances do not swell and do not clog facial pores.
Bathing stresses the skin
It is important that the bath water is not too hot so that the skin does not dry out. The temperature of the water should not exceed the normal body temperature of 37 degrees and the bath should not last longer than 15 to 20 minutes. After bathing, pat the skin dry, do not rub it off and then apply cream. A nourishing bath oil also keeps the skin supple.
Blow dry nail polish
Blowing takes even longer for the nail polish to dry. For the polish to dry, the solvents in the air must evaporate, the moist air you breathe softens the nail polish again and delays drying. It is best to simply wait 5 minutes until the nail polish has hardened.
Nail polish makes nails brittle
Good nail polish contains nourishing substances and keeps the nails flexible. Nail polish remover can sometimes damage the nails. To be on the safe side, only use acetone-free nail polish remover and only apply as much as necessary.
File nails in one direction only
If you use a glass file, you can file the nails in both directions, as the smooth glass surface cannot tear the nails. However, a sandpaper file can tear the nail layers and cause the nail to break. Sandblade or mienral files should therefore only be filed in one direction.
Mascara causes eyelashes to break
It is important to remove the mascara before going to bed and to use an eyelash curler to shape the lashes before applying the mascara, as the colour hardens the lashes and can cause them to break. However, the mascara itself usually contains nourishing substances and protects the lashes.
100 brush strokes per day
As long as you use a brush with natural bristles and not one with metal or plastic bristles, brushing is good for your hair. The scalp is supplied with blood and dirt is combed out of the hair. This stimulates hair growth and strengthens the hair.
Cutting makes the hair thicker
Not true. However, any damaged ends are removed when cutting and the hair looks fuller and healthier.
Shaving your legs increases hair growth
This only seems to be the case because the hairs have a smooth cut surface after shaving and feel hard and prickly when they grow back. However, they grow back in the same thickness as usual. Instead of shaving, the hair can be removed by waxing, which pulls it out at the root. This makes the hairs feel less hard when they grow back.
High sun protection factor makes the skin tan less
Even if it takes a little longer for the skin to tan, the intensity of the tan is the same, whether with a high or low sun protection factor. However, with a high sun protection factor, the tan lasts longer and sunbathing is healthier.
