Dogs are curious by nature and sniff everything that comes under their noses. This occasionally includes hedgehogs and porcupines, which can have painful consequences for the dog. 

A porcupine can shoot dozens or even hundreds of sharp needles at the dog.to protect themselves. How easy it is to remove these spines depends on how many are stuck in the dog. If there are too many, you should consult a vet.

 

The dog should be placed in a comfortable position. This should be done in a reassuring manner, as the dog is in pain and probably frightened. It is important for the owner not to show panic, which the dog feels and which is transferred to him. 

Thick gloves are necessary to protect against the needles or sudden reflexive snapping of the dog. It is best to perform the treatment in pairs, while one holds and calms the dog, the other tries to remove the pricks. Using needle-nose pliers, grasp the needles one by one at the lowest shaft and pull them straight out with a fluid but quick movement. Continue in this way until all the needles have been removed. Apply disinfectant to the puncture wounds with cotton wool so that they do not become infected. 

Pack the removed thorns well and dispose of them so that no one can get hurt by them. 

 

The vet should be called if:

- the spines are too difficult to pull out

- Too many spikes in the dog

- the dog is too aggressive because of the pain

- some wounds have already become infected
