When the beak becomes too long in birds: The beak of budgies, canaries and other common pet birds grows about two to 10cm per year, depending on the size and species of the bird. Since the beak wears out just as quickly through chaffing and pecking, you usually don't even notice that it is growing at all. If the beak grows faster than the bird can wear it out, it becomes too long and prevents the bird from eating, playing and climbing.
How to prevent the beak from becoming too long in birds
The main cause of excessive beak growth is inadequate nutrition and too few opportunities for the bird to sharpen its beak.
To prevent the beak from becoming too long in birds, the bird needs sufficient opportunity to wear it out. The cage should be equipped with a number of different opportunities. These include fresh branches from fruit trees from which the bird can nibble the bark, perches wrapped in sandpaper, crackers or wooden toys. As soon as the things wear out, they should be replaced so that the bird can always sharpen its beak and claws.
In addition, the bird should be given hard food grains that require it to use its beak when eating. Most feed seeds consist of soft grains. Besides hard crackers, sunflower seeds, various types of nuts or shot grains are well suited.
The bird's diet should be balanced and consist of fresh fruits, leafy vegetables and a mineral stone in addition to grains. The bottom of the cage should always be strewn with fresh bird sand, as this contains small grains of grit which the bird nibbles.
Another cause for a beak that is too long can be mites. Mite infestation can be recognised by crusts on the beak or legs. Mite infestation must be treated quickly by a vet to prevent excessive beak growth.

Fresh natural twigs encourage the bird to nibble on them. However, first make sure that the branches are from a tree that is well tolerated, as some tree species are poisonous. Fruit trees are the safest.
Some bird species naturally have a significantly longer upper beak. If unsure, consult your vet.
If the beak peels, this can usually be remedied by feeding various nuts. Nuts contain a lot of vitamin E and healthy fatty acids. A lack of these can cause peeling of the beak. However, depending on the bird species, the nuts may need to be chopped small.
Never punish the bird if it destroys its bird toy. Nibbling on toys is in the nature of the bird and is part of keeping it healthy.
If the beak has become too long in birds, one should never trim the beak of the bird itself. Trimming the beak is much more risky than trimming the claws. If you do it wrong, the bird will not be able to eat. A beak that is too long should only be trimmed by a vet.
