Cat urine exudes a particularly pungent and unpleasant odour. Apart from this, cat urine leaves permanent stains on carpets or furniture.

There are many reasons why cats do their business outside their litter tray, such as unclean litter trays, stress, old age or illness.

How do you remove cat urine?

Cat urine stains on wood:

Urine has a foul odour on wood and is absorbed by the wood, causing it to rot. To prevent this, it is best to act immediately after the "accident". Soak up as much as possible with dry cloths or absorbent paper.

Dab the stain thoroughly with a warm, damp cloth. Then rub dry.

Now pour light-coloured vinegar (diluted 1:3 with lukewarm water) into a spray bottle and spray over a large area of the stain. After a few minutes, rub again with a damp cloth.

Before applying the vinegar, test it on a less visible part of the wood.

Remove the vinegar residue with a fresh, damp, warm cloth. Then rub dry.

Cats urine stains on carpet or upholstery:

Urine can penetrate the carpet fibres and cause mould to grow. Therefore, it is important to act as quickly as possible. If the stain has already dried, it is better to pre-soak it with water.

As with wood, first dab with dry cloths or paper towels. Press firmly until the cloth remains reasonably dry.

Apply a vinegar solution with a cloth and rub in, wait a few minutes and then soak up with dry cloths.

For carpets, however, it is better to use a special carpet cleaner or urine stain remover (available from pet shops). Follow the instructions on the packet.

Finally, wash out the cleaner or vinegar solution with lukewarm water and rub as dry as possible.

Repeat the cleaning process several times if necessary.

If you can't find the stain Sometimes the urine stain is in a less visible place and the odour spreads throughout the room, which often makes it difficult to find the source of the odour. But the stain must be found!

The easiest way to do this is with a black light lamp. Cat urine glows under black light. So it's best to make the room dark, switch off all other light sources and go searching with a portable black light lamp.

Why quick cleaning is so important:

As already mentioned, the chance of completely removing the urine stain is greatest when the stain is still fresh. However, it is even more important to remove the odour as quickly as possible, because if you can still smell the urine, the cat can too. The cat goes to the toilet where it already smells like the toilet.

Prevention:

Of course, it is better to prevent urine stains from occurring than to clean them quickly. In most cases, the cause of a normally clean cat suddenly peeing in the home is an unclean litter tray. Cats are very clean animals and have a sensitive nose. If their litter tray does not meet their standards, they will look for a place that does not irritate their sense of smell.

If you can rule out an unclean litter tray as the cause, observe your cat and possibly go to the vet.
