If the horse's coat and mane have become dull due to dandruff, they can be restored to a healthy lustre with the right care. Dandruff in horses is often caused by skin diseases such as eczema and seborrhoea and is an excessive shedding of dead skin cells.

 

Horses can develop dandruff when they are under enormous stress, malnourished or ill. Hormonal imbalances can also lead to the development of dandruff. It is important to treat dandruff immediately before inflammation or infection occurs.

The scaly area on the coat and mane must be washed once a week with a shampoo containing sulphur. Be sure to rinse the shampoo out thoroughly.
Add a teaspoon of tea tree oil to a small bottle of oatmeal shampoo and leave the shampoo on for five minutes. When rinsing, rub the skin well to loosen the dead skin cells. Then rub the scaly area with a topical balm such as Terzolin cream or Nozoral cream.

Add corn oil and vegetables to the feed.

Brush the horse well every day and comb through the mane.

Do not use the horse's brush and comb on other horses. If the affected horse shows other signs of illness such as rapid weight loss or changes in behaviour, the vet should be called.
