The intensity of a fish's colour depends largely on the quality of the fish food. Without the necessary nutrients, the colours of the fish fade over time.
However, certain foods can also be used to intensify the natural colour of the fish. Which foods intensify the colour of the fish?
Food from the household
The meat of herring, salmon and crustaceans contains many carotenoids, a pigment that is absorbed by coloured fish and which emphasises red, orange and yellow pigments.
To do this, buy seafood from the supermarket, which should of course not be industrially processed (i.e. not breaded or similar) and freeze it. Finely grate the frozen pieces for feeding so that they are not too big for the fish.
Many normal foods also contain colour-enhancing pigments. These include paprika spice, beetroot juice and carrots. These can be mixed with the fish food. Fish pellets, for example, can be soaked in a little beetroot juice or carrot juice and then fed. Alternatively, dried carrots can be processed into powder and fed together with the paprika powder.
Special food from the pet shop
Pet shops offer various foods to intensify the colour of fish. These mainly contain carotenoids, vitamin A and unsaturated fatty acids.
