There are various methods for measuring a horse's pulse. The pulse can be measured on the lower jaw, the fetlock, the cannon bone, the heart or under the tail.

 

Measuring the pulse on the lower jaw: Find the point on the lower jaw where several vascular cords run over the lower jaw. Then place your index finger and middle finger on the highest point of the vascular cord and apply light pressure until you can feel the pulse.

 

Measure the pulse at the fetlock: Take the highest point on the inside and outside of the fetlock between thumb and index finger and gently jerk until the pulse can be felt.

 

Measuring the pulse at the cannon bone: three fingers are placed on the inside of the veins under the ankle joint and light pressure is applied until the pulse can be felt.

 

Measuring the pulse on the heart: Use a stethoscope to listen to the heart rate on the left behind the bump of the elbow.

 

Measure the pulse on the tail: Press lightly with three fingers on the underside of the tail near the base of the tail until the pulse can be measured.
