Bleeding from the nose can occur due to minor injuries, be a sign of overexertion or be triggered by a chronic lung disease.

Nosebleeds are often seen in thoroughbreds and sport horses.

As a general rule, a drop of blood in the nostrils is usually harmless. If larger amounts of blood flow from the nose, the vet should be contacted immediately.

 

First aid for nosebleeds in horses

 

If the nosebleed occurs when cantering, stop immediately.

Loosen the saddle girth.

Leave the reins loose and keep the horse's head as low as possible so that no blood collects in the lungs.

Only lead the horse back to the stable when the acute bleeding has stopped.
