Cats are very clean animals, especially if they are indoor cats, it is important to give them sufficient opportunity to do their business. Cats want to use a clean toilet just as much as we humans do.

For growing children, it is good and useful to give them small tasks so that they learn to treat their cat responsibly. So if you have children in the family, you can show them how to make a customised toilet for their cat and decorate it to taste.

You can easily and inexpensively make a customised litter tray with natural cat litter for your cat yourself.

• Get a plastic container with a lid in the desired size.

• Mark the opening of the future toilet with a felt-tip pen.

• Depending on the hardness of the plastic, cut out the opening with a carpet knife or a small saw. Help the children with this if necessary.

• The cat litter tray can be decorated as desired by the children with stickers and pens.

• Cut an old plastic kitchen sieve to the appropriate size and place it at the bottom of the plastic container. This makes it easy to remove and empty the sieve with the cat litter when cleaning.

• It is best to use sand, earth and salt as cat litter. Baking soda is good for absorbing odours. The sand absorbs liquids, the soil ensures a paw-friendly consistency and also absorbs odours. A cup of salt in the mixture makes the cat litter coarse, so that faeces are better absorbed. Now you can add some nice-smelling herbs, such as lavender, basil or thyme, as desired.

• Once the toilet is filled with litter, you can put the lid on and place it in the desired location.
