Animals in bed

Dogs and cats like to snuggle up in their masters' and mistresses' beds. Unfortunately, this often means less restful sleep for humans, because the animals often unintentionally wake them up several times a night. About half of all sleep-disturbed people find the cause in the fact that the dog sleeps in the bed with them.

In order for humans to get their well-deserved sleep, rules of sleeping together must be established. It is important that dog or cat learn that they are only allowed to sleep in a certain area. If there is no place in the bed that satisfies both of them, the animal must get its own sleeping basket.
The animal should be encouraged by positive behaviour to sleep in this assigned place.

If the dog or cat takes over the bed of the human being where they should not or if they start licking or nibbling, it must be made clear that the human being does not want this behaviour. Consistently say "no" if the animal disturbs you and do not give in to growling or hissing. Then put the animal in its sleeping place. As soon as the animal lies down in its sleeping place, it should be praised or rewarded.

Cats are very clean animals that constantly groom themselves and remove dirt from their fur. Dogs, on the other hand, often carry dirt and bacteria around in their fur until the next bath. Therefore, it is advisable for dogs to sleep on the blanket instead of under it, unless they have their own blanket.

People are often woken up in the middle of the night when the dog has to go for a walk. This can only be prevented by giving the dog the opportunity to empty its bladder before going to bed, so that it can last the whole night.
