Car seats for dogs are no frills: the dog travels comfortably and safely in the car and driving is even more fun.
There are basically two different types of car seats for dogs. More popular are the dog seats that are attached to the front passenger seat with the seat belt. The other type sits on the centre console between the driver and front passenger and is attached to the console with straps.
A special dog seat can be raised so that the dog can see out of the front window. Dogs can also get motion sickness, which can be prevented if they can look out the front while travelling. It also makes travelling by car much more fun for the dog, as it can see what is going on around it.
The seat alone does not make driving safer for the dog; it must be strapped into its seat with a harness. The dog seat has a belt to which a dog harness can be securely attached. The inside of the seat is padded so that the dog is comfortable.
Some dog seats have holders for food and water containers that the dog can reach while travelling.
A car seat is designed for dogs between 2 and 15kg. There are models in which two small dogs can travel together. The seat should correspond to the size of the dog so that it cannot injure itself. A dog that is heavier and larger than 15kg can be secured to the passenger seat without a seat using a safety harness.
The selection of dog car seats in pet shops is usually small. It is better to buy online and find a variety of models there.
