You have to invest a lot of time and money. Before you buy a horse, you should know where you can stable it and how much it will cost you. The purchase price of a horse is often far less than the annual stable costs. Once you have made the decision to buy a horse after careful consideration, the question arises as to what kind of horse and how to proceed with the purchase.

What kind of horse should I buy

In this chapter I will not go into detail about individual horse breeds, but only about horse types.
The type of horse you want to buy depends on various factors.
Open stable or box housing

In general, all horses feel more comfortable in an open stable than in a box. However, horses kept in open stables are usually dirtier, which may not be in your interest. It also depends on the climate where you live. Not all types of horses can tolerate the outdoor temperatures in the northern German winter.

As riding is a team sport (rider and horse), you should choose a horse that suits you in terms of temperament. If you tend to be anxious and nervous, your horse should be calm. A child should not have a horse or pony that likes to buck, whereas an experienced rider needs a horse that is sensitive and responds to the slightest command.

It is not essential to have riding experience before you buy a horse, but it makes sense to have had at least a few riding lessons. The more familiar you are with your own weaknesses and preferences, the better you will be able to buy a suitable horse.

Another consideration is what type of rider you are. Do you ride English or Western style, do you like jumping or dressage, or do you just want to ride cross-country? No matter what type of riding you prefer, if it's your first horse, it better be trained accordingly. As your first horse, it is better not to buy a very young horse, but one that already has a few years of training and experience.

Where should I buy my horse

The stable where you ride or want to stable your horse is one place to start looking. Perhaps there is a horse owner there who would like to sell his horse privately. Or the stable owner has connections.

Riding instructors can act quite well as mediators, they know many horse owners and have an interest in ensuring that their riding students stick with them.
If you want to spend a little more on your horse, you can buy one directly from the breeder. The stable owner should actually know about breeders of your favourite horse breed in your area.

If you don't have that much money available and are only a leisure rider, you can buy horses from a butcher. They usually sell them cheaply there. There are many people who get rid of a horse because they suddenly have no more time or the horse has a weak character. Then they simply take it to the butcher. The butcher keeps "good" horses and sells them privately. Not only can you buy your dream horse there for little money, but you have also saved a horse's life and found a friend.

Finally, there are also newspaper adverts. You may also find a bargain there. But be careful when buying from private individuals, as they don't have a reputation to protect and can rip you off.

No matter where you buy your horse, you should always take a horse expert or vet with you who can check the horse for general illnesses. This may cost a little more, but it's worth it, because if the horse suffers from a chronic illness that you didn't know about, you'll pay a lot in vet costs later on.

The vet examines the horse primarily for:

Age

General condition of the heart, eyes and digestive system

Appearance of the coat

Bone damage

Lameness

Parasites

Test the horse

While you leave the health check to the expert, you can concentrate on the horse's temperament and see whether it will suit you. It's best to look at the horse outside in daylight. Observe how it behaves when being groomed and saddled and pay attention to its ears and eyes.
You should definitely test ride the horse. But also ask the seller to give you a short demonstration. Let the salesperson demonstrate and pay attention to the horse's gaits. If you specifically want to buy a show jumping or dressage horse, ask the seller to show you what the horse can do.
You can often agree a trial period of up to two weeks with the seller, during which you can try out the horse and find out whether it suits you or not. You can return it within this period if this has been agreed beforehand.

At the end

Whether you want to buy a horse for sport or leisure, never forget that a horse is a living being. It is now up to you to give the horse a beautiful and healthy life.

Ein Pferd zu besitzen ist eine große Verantwortung.
