Consistently show the dog that you are the master and you will achieve a harmonious coexistence with the dog.

Some dog owners spend a lot of money on training their dog, but it's actually the owners themselves who need a bit of training. Here are a few tips on how to train your dog to listen to commands.

Train the dog with simple commands or hand gestures. The general rule of thumb is that monosyllabic commands such as "sit" should be the most effective, but it really comes down to tone of voice, or always using the same phrase that the dog can recognise.
If the dog responds correctly to the command, it must be praised. Small treats have a very motivating effect on the dog.

If you always use a specific gesture together with the verbal command, you will be able to command the dog without words if necessary.

The most important thing when training a dog is discipline. The dog must obey. Excessive affection can lead to a lack of discipline and thus to problems. The dog must respect its master or mistress.

You can't expect discipline from a dog with excess energy and too little exercise. You must therefore ensure that the dog has enough exercise and can let off steam regularly. A dog with enough exercise quickly learns not to pull on the lead and run ahead. The aim is to let the dog run calmly on a loose lead. To achieve this, use the 'sit' command every time the dog starts to run. Pull gently on the lead to draw the dog's attention to you.

Problems when exercising

Barking: Call the dog to you and admonish him. Imagine he is a child that you have to admonish. A sudden sound from you or water from a spray bottle will distract the dog from barking until it focusses on you.

Chew: Provide sufficient chew toys. Always admonish the dog when he chews something forbidden. Teach him the 'leave it' command for anything you don't want him to do. If necessary, use an anti-dog spray on objects you want the dog to stay away from.

Aggressiveness: For particularly aggressive dogs, you should consult a specialist, otherwise injuries may occur. In the case of mild aggression, make it clear to the dog that you always do everything first. You go through the door first, you eat first, you run up the stairs first, etc. You are the leader.

The key to success with proper dog training is to remain consistent. You have to finish what you have started.

Ob man einen Welpen oder einen schon ausgewachsenen Hund trainieren möchte, die Methode ist die gleiche.
