It doesn't have to be this way, there are methods you can use to keep your skin soft and moisturised even in the freezing cold of winter.

Here are some simple tips to help prevent dry and cracked skin.

The cause of chapped and dry skin is lack of moisture. If the skin becomes too dry, it pinches and itches, and you scratch yourself to the point of bleeding. Warm heating air draws moisture out of the skin. To avoid this, one must ensure the humidity of the indoor air so that the skin's natural moisture remains trapped in it.

One method of keeping the skin moist is to use a moisturising lotion. In winter or if the symptoms of dry skin are particularly bad, it is a good idea to buy a moisturising milk for very dry skin. Cream the skin two to three times a day, preferably directly after a bath or shower.

It is important to wash with warm rather than hot water. A high water temperature also dries out the skin. Use an appropriately rich face cream, not only to protect the skin from drying out, but also from premature ageing.

The body needs moisture from inside and outside. Coffee, tea and carbonated drinks cause dehydration and dry out the body from the inside. Drinking plenty of fluids is important, preferably water and juices. Drink six to eight glasses of fluid a day.

There are special exfoliating creams and brushes that can be used to rub off the dead dry skin cells. This keeps the epidermis fresh in every season. Exfoliation once a week is sufficient, too frequent rubbing on the skin is irritating.

To control the humidity of the environment, i.e. the flat, humidifiers should be placed near the radiators. Plants are also good moisturisers for the home.

To protect the skin from additional drying, always rinse only with gloves, wear cotton socks and do not allow household chemicals to come into direct contact with the skin.

If you still suffer from extremely dry skin after following these tips, you should consult a dermatologist. It may be a chronic skin condition that requires specialist treatment.

Especially in winter, millions of people suffer from uncomfortably itchy legs, chapped lips and hands.
