Leipzig is best known for the Leipzig Book Fair and is also home to the German Library.<br \/>Leipzig is an old city full of history. Here are the highlights of the sights the city has to offer. <\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<br \/><strong>University<\/strong>. Leipzig is home to Germany's oldest university after Heidelberg, the <strong>Alma Mater Lipsiensis<\/strong>. It is located directly in the city centre in Universit\u00e4tsstra\u00dfe near the <strong>Opera House<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The east side of the market square is dominated by the <strong>old town hall<\/strong> from whose so-called Annunciation Balcony the Leipzig City Pipers give a concert every weekend. The town hall houses the <strong>City Museum<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Just a few steps away from the market square is the <strong>Barthels Hof<\/strong> and the coffee house <strong>Coffee tree<\/strong>one of the oldest coffee houses in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>St Thomas' Church <\/strong>lies to the south-west of the market square and is home to the famous St Thomas Choir. Johann Sebastian Bach is buried in St Thomas' Church. The church dates back to the 13th century. <\/p>\n<p>On the south side of the market is the <strong>Royal House<\/strong>where, among others, Peter the Great came and went.<\/p>\n<p>The so-called <strong>Naschmarkt <\/strong>was originally a meeting place for merchants. Today, concerts and literary events are held there. There is also the one mentioned in Goethe's Faust <strong>Auerbachskeller<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Just a few minutes' walk from the city centre, the elegant new building of the <strong>Mercury Hotels <\/strong>Leipzig Am Johannisplatz.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-671\" src=\"https:\/\/www.neuropool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/merkurhotel.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Leipzig Merkurhotel\" title=\"Leipzig Merkurhotel\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.neuropool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/merkurhotel.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.neuropool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/merkurhotel-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the centre of Leipzig, you can take a trip back to the city of Rome in 312. In the <strong>Panometer<\/strong> is home to the largest panorama in the world and shows a complete panoramic view of ancient Rome.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-672\" src=\"https:\/\/www.neuropool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/leipzig-panometer.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Leipzig Panometer, Rome\" title=\"Leipzig Panometer, Rome\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.neuropool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/leipzig-panometer.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.neuropool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/leipzig-panometer-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To the south of the old town is the imposing <strong>Monument to the Battle of the Nations<\/strong>which is a memorial to the 1813 battle against Napoleon. It is 91 metres high. From the platform of the monument you have a wonderful view of Leipzig and the surrounding area.
