Although we cannot always avoid stressful situations, we can learn to make them less stressful for us and easier to cope with. Situations are usually stressful because there seems to be no solution to the problem. In reality, however, it is we ourselves who block the flow of our thoughts and prevent us from finding the solution.

Although stress in itself is not a disease, stressful situations can trigger illnesses over time. It is therefore not only more pleasant but also healthier to organise your life as stress-free as possible.

Follow a few simple rules and you will learn to rise above things and not expose your body and mind to unnecessary stress. You will realise that with a cool head, the solutions to the problem will come all by themselves.

A distinction is made between acute and chronic stress. Acute stress is a sudden, seemingly insurmountable situation that triggers physical stress symptoms.

If these stress symptoms occur over a prolonged period of time, they become chronic stress.

The symptoms vary from person to person. Some show physical symptoms such as heavy sweating, palpitations or dizziness, while others are more prone to psychological symptoms such as anxiety, lack of concentration, lack of self-confidence or panic attacks.

Just like the symptoms themselves, the way in which people deal with stress varies from person to person. Many people compensate for stress with binge eating or alcohol abuse, which in turn leads to illness.

One of the best ways to combat stress is positive thinking. It may sound trite, but studies have shown that it is the best way to combat stress. People who are optimistic by nature show significantly fewer symptoms of stress than people who tend to think negatively.

The best way to cope with stress in the long term is to learn to be optimistic.

How do you become optimistic?

There are a few guidelines that will help you learn to think positively.

* First of all, it is important to recognise the negative thought that triggers the stress. The moment you recognise the negative thought, you need to focus on the positive that you find in the situation. If you find yourself in a situation where you need to raise money for something important in a short space of time and this situation is stressing you out, think about all the positive things you can find. Be proud of how you are coping with this situation, think of other success stories, situations from which you have emerged triumphant. Whilst positive thoughts alone will not get you the money (or whatever), positive thoughts will influence your reactions and your ability to find a solution.

* Stop generalising. Just because a similar situation has gone badly for you before doesn't mean it always will. We tend to feel haunted by Murphy's Law, but in reality, good things happen to us at least as often as bad things. We just tend to remember the bad ones. That's what changing and reversing this mindset is all about. Remember your success stories.

* In your horror fantasies, you usually imagine the outcome of a situation and the worst possible version of it. In your mind, the unpaid bill mentioned above inevitably leads to losing your home and living on the street. But in reality, there are many small steps between the cause of stress and the worst-case scenario. Go through these small steps in your mind and you will see that there will still be many opportunities to avert the worst and master the situation. Instead of always seeing the big picture and painting it in the worst colours, take the individual elements step by step. Think small. A small situation is much easier to master than a large one. Once you have successfully mastered a small situation, you can gradually master the next one.

* Even at the end of the darkest tunnel, there is a light somewhere. Focus on this light and strengthen it. Lift and emphasise your hope and your positive thoughts.

* Learn to recognise your own worth. Don't put yourself down, but build yourself up. Believe in yourself and don't worry about what other people think of you.

* Stand in front of the mirror and say positive things about yourself to your face. Tell yourself how well you can cope with stressful situations. Tell yourself things like:

"I can do this"

"I am strong"

"I am a valuable person"

* Only think about the situation in question at certain times that you choose for yourself. The rest of the time, block out all thoughts about it completely and occupy yourself with something you enjoy.

Always remember: there is no such thing as stress, only stressful situations and how you know how to deal with them.

Die meisten Menschen leiden unter Stress, sind Opfer eines stressigen Alltags; einige können damit besser umgehen als andere.
