With the ever-growing population, what is thrown away every day will eventually become unsustainable. Many acute environmental problems could be tackled far better if everyone could do their bit.

What is wasted

In our culture, we are used to buying food in abundance. If something is missing, it is quickly replaced. We have forgotten how lucky we are to be able to eat our fill every day. Unfortunately, this leads to us buying more food than we consume and simply throwing the rest away thoughtlessly.

We have also become a throwaway society when it comes to everyday objects. Anything that no longer works properly, or is simply no longer new, is disposed of and replaced without further ado. Of course, this is partly due to the fact that it is cheap enough, and sometimes even cheaper, to replace items rather than repair them.

How can I reduce my waste

The basic rule for everything you buy and use is: no more than you need! This starts with the grocery shopping. Before you go shopping, you should think about what food is still in the house and how much of it will actually be used before the expiry date. For perishable foods, you can roughly calculate how much can be used up in time. When preparing food, you should make sure that you use up the food that will spoil first.

If an item breaks, first check whether it can be repaired or utilised in another way. Then you can always throw it away. Also consider whether you know someone who collects broken items and can use them for themselves.

Frugality can be fun

Many people simply enjoy reducing their waste more and more once they have started. It's a kind of sense of achievement and you retain a positive feeling of doing your bit for the environment.

You can even let your creative side run wild and keep finding new ways to reuse packaging material in new and useful ways. What's more, you can save real money by calculating your actual consumption more realistically.

Make thriftiness popular

Humans are sociable creatures and always seek the approval of others. Unfortunately, despite the urgency of environmental problems, frugality and cutting back on wasteful consumption is still not the norm and is sometimes even teased. That is why it is so important that people who really care about the environment and are willing to limit their consumption are proud of it and motivate their friends and acquaintances.

How can I reduce my household waste?

The amount of waste produced in every household every day is unbelievably large.
