When you are in a low mood, accept your feelings and try to express them, but don't stay in that mood for too long and don't get sucked into a deep hole.

It is often assumed that moods come and go on their own and that you cannot influence them yourself. You have to train yourself to do so, but you can learn to control and change your mood. Once you have learnt to pull yourself out of a depressive phase, you will become a happier and healthier person.

Even if you can't simply think the mood away at first, you still have control over your thoughts and your perception. Consciously steer your thoughts in a positive direction and stay on this positive wave. Consciously focus on beautiful things in your immediate surroundings. Positive thoughts lead to the release of happiness hormones and thus contribute to a positive change in your feelings.

It's usually not easy to change your thoughts from a negative to a positive perspective, so sometimes you have to play a little trick. Do something other than what you're currently doing. Go for a walk for a few minutes, listen to music or do a few relaxation exercises.

Things you should focus your thoughts on are, for example, a particularly beautiful experience or a loved one; concentrate on your goals or dream of a beautiful holiday destination.

Laugh yourself into a better mood

It may sound strange, but laughter is a good mood filter. It's scientifically proven that when you laugh, even if it's a forced laugh at first, your mood inevitably lifts after a few minutes. Try to smile a few times every hour or so and think of five things you are grateful for.

Your posture has a lot of influence on your emotional state. When you are in a bad phase, you tend to slump your body and slump your shoulders. Stand up proud and straight and consciously raise your shoulders. Without tensing up, of course. You will see that if you hold your body upright and straight, your self-esteem will improve and your bad mood will diminish.

A little exercise gets your circulation going, loosens your muscles and distracts you from gloomy thoughts.

If you are going through a really difficult time, feel free to cry if you feel like it. Don't keep your feelings bottled up inside. Once you've had a good cry, set yourself a time limit for the sad phase and then get ready to look ahead.

Everyone goes through hard times, and everyone is in a bad mood from time to time.
