They say that if you want to lose weight, you should cut bananas out of your diet. Is it actually true that bananas make you fat and how did this bad reputation come about?

One of the typical arguments against bananas is that they contain a lot of sugar, and sugar makes you fat, right? True, the banana is sweet, but the sugar in the banana is natural fructose, which means that it is broken down more slowly by the body than the conventional refined sugar in confectionery. The slow breakdown means that blood sugar levels don't spike dramatically, as they do after eating a chocolate bar.

Bananas not only contain fructose, but also a range of important vitamins and minerals that keep the body healthy and fit. Bananas are rich in potassium, vitamin B6, biotin, copper and manganese, not to mention fibre. The latter ensures that you feel pleasantly satiated after eating a banana, unlike many muesli bars that contain added and not natural fibre.

One banana provides 10% of the recommended daily potassium intake. Potassium lowers blood pressure, helps build muscle and strengthens bones.

One banana even covers a third of the daily requirement of vitamin B6. Bananas are a particularly good source of vitamin B6 for vegetarians and vegans, as vitamin B6 is found in many animal products.

The key to an effective and successful diet is to eat in moderation. If you eat large amounts of food, you will naturally gain weight. So if you eat excessive amounts of bananas per day, you will most likely exceed your calorie requirements and gain weight as a result. However, this applies equally to all foods.

Conclusion: One to three bananas a day are a very healthy and useful part of a successful diet plan!

When it comes to dieting and slimming, bananas have been getting a pretty bad rap for some time now.
