Over long periods of time, many people damage their walking tools with seemingly harmless habits. What are the worst dangers for our feet?

1. soles that are too flat. Especially in summer, many people tend to walk long distances in simple flip-flops or ballerinas. Even if these are soft and slightly springy soles, they do not protect against misalignment of the feet and legs. Shoes that are too flat cause the feet to turn too far inwards beyond their normal range of movement. This pronounced inward rotation can lead to pain in the heels and knees, inflammation, tendon strain and back pain. A slight heel on the shoes supports the feet when walking.

2.heels that are too high. Prolonged walking on high heels with pointed toes is an absolute horror for feet. The toes are squeezed against each other and form bunions and bone deformations on the outside of the ball of the foot. The high heels ensure that the foot does not roll properly. It's a bit like walking on tiptoe. The front ball of the foot bears almost all the pressure of the impact and is therefore overloaded. The calf muscles are not used sufficiently and atrophy.

3. running barefoot on hard ground. Walking barefoot is only healthy if you walk on soft, natural and undulating ground, such as a meadow. On concrete and tiles, the feet receive a hard impact with every step, which is absorbed by the entire spine. A soft surface adapts to the footprint. It sinks deeper at the heel and the ball of the foot, but gives the inside of the foot sufficient support. Hard ground does not yield to the foot, so the softer inside of the foot is pressed flat against the ground. This results in a flat foot.

4. overweight. The more the body weighs, the more weight the feet logically have to bear. With every step, the foot has to withstand more pressure than it can. This wears down the bones and tendons over time. The best way for overweight people to put their feet at less risk is to do sports that put less strain on the feet, such as swimming or yoga.

5. sudden overloading. Just like the rest of the body, the feet must gradually become accustomed to greater strain. You should therefore slowly increase the strain and wear suitable shoes.

6. not stretching the calf muscles enough. The calf muscles need to be stretched from time to time, otherwise you can easily get pain in your lower leg or foot. So occasionally stand on your toes on a step and let your heels bounce downwards.

The feet carry the weight of the whole body, yet are constantly neglected.
