Children and grandparents share a special bond and the children's parents have a little time for themselves. It is not always easy to bridge the generation gap and make the most of the time together, because communication between the youngest and the oldest has its pitfalls.

Why is a good relationship between grandparents and grandchildren so important?

Grandparents give their grandchildren a sense of family and a sense of continuity and history. In addition, they are often spoilt by grandma and grandpa.

The grandparents enjoy the opportunity to pass on their knowledge and life experience, tell family stories and take a look at the younger world.

Children of all ages, even as teenagers, benefit from being involved in the lives of adults other than their parents. The parents who are with the children on a daily basis have developed their routines and are often more concerned with easing their frayed nerves than going to the playground, cinema or shopping centre. For them, it can be a huge relief to relinquish responsibility from time to time and at the same time offer the children an alternative experience.

Regular contact with each other

Even in families where parents and grandparents live far away from each other, there should be regular contact with the grandchildren. They should visit each other frequently and communicate by phone or computer in between, if possible.

Whilst communicating via the internet can be a challenge for some grandparents, it offers both parties a wonderful opportunity to share knowledge. The children can show the grandparents the technology, while grandma and grandpa can tell the children about communication in their own time while learning new concepts.

Every generation should contribute to a good relationship

Grandparents should endeavour to be there for their grandchildren whenever they want to make contact and create a friendly, warm atmosphere. Parents can help by having photos of grandma and grandpa around the house and occasionally reminding the children of the toys they have received from their grandparents, but it is important not to see each other as competitors. Grandparents have their own place in children's lives and should not replace parents and their principles, but only complement them. Even if the parents sometimes see the grandparents' opinion as interference, they should try not to cause any bad blood for the sake of the children, because the grandparents are only there for a limited time and this time should be used qualitatively.

Für alle drei Generationen ist es vorteilhaft, wenn die Großeltern viel Zeit mit den Enkelkindern verbringen.
