If you are forced to go to work despite a runny nose, headache, sore throat and watery eyes, take these tips to heart. That way, you'll make it through the working day without infecting all your colleagues.

The most important thing when you have a cold is, of course, to drink plenty of fluids to flush the virus out of your body. Take a thermos flask of hot herbal tea with you. Otherwise, stick to mineral water, preferably non-carbonated. Avoid sugary soft drinks and juices. It's good to freshen up your mineral water with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. You can also treat yourself to a cup of coffee in between. The caffeine stimulates your body and gives you a temporary boost.

Buy yourself some throat lozenges on the way to work. Sore throat lozenges, for example sage or eucalyptus, soothe the throat and relieve the unwanted irritation of a cough.

In addition to vitamin C, the body also needs protein to produce the antibodies that fight the common cold. However, avoid high-fat foods that put a strain on the body. A wholemeal sandwich with lean chicken and nuts is a good snack. For your vitamin C supply, take fresh fruit with you and enrich your sandwich with cucumber and peppers. If you have the opportunity, take some chicken soup with you to warm up. Even if you don't have much of an appetite, you can usually eat soup. It provides you with fluids and anti-inflammatory ingredients.

Ginger has a calming effect on sore airways. However, only fresh ginger has the same effect; dried ginger does not have the same effect. If possible, get some fresh ginger to add to your herbal tea.

The best way to combat the symptoms of a cold is to take paracetamol or cold medicine with a combination of paracetamol, acetylcysteine and caffeine. Avoid medicines that make you feel tired; you should take these before going to bed.

Dry office air promotes the living conditions for the virus. Make sure you get fresh air regularly. Take a walk during your lunch break, wearing protective clothing of course.

Avoid stress. It's important to stay calm and take the day slowly. The more stress you put yourself under, the longer you will have to struggle with the symptoms of a cold.

To avoid infecting the whole workforce, avoid getting too close to your colleagues. Tell them that you will refrain from shaking hands to protect them. Wash your hands frequently and sneeze into the crook of your arm or a handkerchief.

Often you simply can't afford to stay home sick.
