In the academic world, ADHD can be a major obstacle to success, so students with so-called fidgeting syndrome should learn to work on themselves, because the ability to concentrate can be trained.

Attention plays a key role in academic success. It influences thoughts and feelings and, not least, behaviour. In particular, however, a lack of attention impairs motivation and thus hinders success. Attention determines who you are, who you want to be and how you achieve this. The human brain is capable of achieving any set goal. The more attentive you are in your daily life, the more likely you are to become what you want.

If the attention mechanism is not working properly, you are literally standing in the way of your own happiness.

If you want to train your attention skills, you need to find your own individual way of focussing on something. Good attention skills go hand in hand with good decisions. To control ADHD and optimise the attention mechanism, you have to become the boss in your own head. You can't let ADHD control you or even hide behind it, you have to learn which circumstances hold your attention and which don't and make them the key to success.

In preparation, you should ask yourself the following questions every night before going to bed and take a moment to reflect on them:

1. what is the goal for tomorrow and what is my responsibility? For example, a student has the goal of solving a task in class and is responsible for taking notes on the topic.

2. how will tomorrow possibly help me in the future? Getting better grades by paying better attention opens up future possibilities and thus the prospect of a more pleasant and carefree life. Even if a single paper or exam seems insignificant in the big picture, it can still help pave the way for the future. So it pays to be attentive.

3. what distracts me in class? What factors contribute to brain drift and how can they be reduced?

4 What does the teacher expect? The teacher is the one who assigns the grades, so it is important to pay attention to what they expect. Usually it is note taking, asking intelligent questions about the topic and being able to answer the teacher's questions. Good preparation for the topic helps to meet the teacher's expectations. If you have already listened well in previous lessons, you will have less catching up to do at home.

5. how do I feel about the challenges of the day? If you feel anger, frustration or boredom, you have to learn to put these feelings to one side, because they get in the way. If you concentrate on the bigger goal in front of you, it is sometimes necessary to fight against your feelings. Negative feelings are distracting and should therefore be compensated for. It is best to learn to use negative feelings to your advantage. Anger and rage can help you to look at a subject more critically, while contentment tends to make people bad listeners. Sadness and depressive moods support reflective thinking. The basic idea is to use the feelings and moods of the day to your advantage and adapt your way of working accordingly. Negative energy can be utilised productively.

6 What can I learn and adopt from other people? You can learn a lot for yourself from the behaviour of other people. If you observe people whose behaviour looks useful for your own success, you can take them as an example. Conversely, you should block behaviour that can be a hindrance.

People with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) find it difficult to concentrate on one thing for long periods of time.
