Coffee was responsible for the highest caffeine consumption with 71%.

The analysis showed that the suicide rate among adults who consumed 2 to 4 cups of coffee a day was 50% lower than among those who drank no or little coffee or decaffeinated coffee. Even excessive consumption of coffee, i.e. more than 4 cups a day, did not reduce the suicide rate.

Even if this does not prove that coffee helps against depression, as there are too many variables within the test groups, this possible connection can be explained neurochemically. Caffeine imitates the substance adenosine in the brain, which functions as a kind of balance of the neurones. By copying adenosine, caffeine blocks the receptors in the nervous system and thus prevents the signals to reduce energy expenditure. The neurostimulants in the brain (dopamine and glutamate) then increase and the body's activity is stimulated.

To a certain extent, it can therefore be said that coffee can act as a kind of mild antidepressant. In the past, there have been similar studies that reinforce the conclusion that coffee, as the most commonly consumed psychoactive substance, can alleviate depression and depressive moods.

Is it true that coffee helps against depression?
