Rainwater, on the other hand, has an average pH of 5.6, so it is acidic. The acidity in rainwater is caused by gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2).

Other gases contained in rainwater besides CO2 are nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and sulphur dioxide (SO2), but in smaller quantities. The acidity of rainwater is therefore mainly caused by CO2. The CO2 concentration is about 355:1,000,000 (0.0355%). This relatively small amount is sufficient to make the water acidic.

The raindrops combine with the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and carbonic acid (H2CO3) is formed. The carbonic acid splits to form H+ (hydrogen ion) and HCO3 (hydrogen carbonate). The hydrogen ion classifies the molecule as an acid, which lowers the pH of the water.

A CO2 concentration of 0.0355% in rainwater is natural. However, man-made pollution can increase the CO2 content in rainwater and make the water even more acidic. In some areas, the pH value in rainwater is 3.0.

The natural carbon dioxide in rainwater is in equilibrium with the atmosphere. One speaks of acid rain from a pH value of 4.0 or less. Acid rain makes the soil more acidic and thus harms plants. In addition to the damaging effect on the environment and health, acid rain causes buildings to deteriorate more quickly.

Pure water has a pH value of 7.0, so it is neutral.
