To find out the capacity of the appliance, you can look at the operating instructions, but the information is usually also given on the appliance itself, namely on the doors of the refrigerator compartments.

The cooling capacities symbolised with stars mean the following:

No star: temperature down to 0ºC, no storage possible for longer than one day

* One star: temperature down to -6ºC, frozen food lasts for a few days

** Two stars: temperature down to -12ºC, frozen food can be stored for 2-3 weeks

*** Three stars: temperature down to -18ºC, frozen food can be stored for up to several months

**** Stars: Freezer, the temperature is also at -18ºC or below, but with these appliances you can also freeze fresh food yourself, as the cooling capacity is sufficient for this.

In the latter case, many appliances also have a quick-freeze setting that speeds up the freezing process. This is particularly important for the shelf life of meat and useful for vegetables, as this method prevents the water contained from expanding or bursting the pores and thus altering the product and its shelf life. Vegetables in particular can otherwise become mushy when defrosted and meat develops freezer burn more quickly.

However, the shelf life and the result of the defrosted frozen food depends not only on the freezer, but also on the consistency of what you freeze.

The more water a product contains, the less easily it can be frozen or defrosted.

The time something spends in the freezer compartment also plays a major role and varies according to the following aspects:

With meat, it depends on the fat content how long it can be kept frozen; the more fat, the shorter the shelf life. The fat becomes rancid if it is stored for too long and spoils the meat.

Tip: You can offer some of the meat to a pet, i.e. a dog or cat, as if they reject it, you can be almost certain that it is spoilt.

Meat can be stored frozen for between 6 weeks and 12 months, of course only in the three- or four-star compartment.

Fruit and vegetables suitable for freezing, such as apples, pears, soft fruits, beans, leeks, carrots, peas etc. can usually be stored frozen for 8-10 months without any problems.

Home-cooked food, cheese, fish and seafood will keep for up to three months.

Bread, 2-3 months, bread rolls 1 month and biscuits 3-4 months.

Quick freezing

Fast freezing is fundamentally important, which is why food should be packaged correctly. It is best to divide it into small portions that are as flat as possible to ensure quick and even freezing. This also makes defrosting quicker.

What is freezer burn?

Freezer burn occurs easily if the frozen food has not been frozen in a vacuum, but in the presence of air. It becomes noticeable with stains and the flavour also suffers, as the food becomes bland. Meat in particular is quickly affected by this.

The shelf life of frozen food depends primarily on the capacity of the freezer.
