In fact, many people underestimate the harmful effects of the sun's rays on the eyes and eye health.

Sunglasses filter the light and ensure that bright sunlight does not dazzle. Sunglasses improve vision in bright sunlight, as contrasts are intensified and irritation caused by stray light and reflections is reduced. It is therefore particularly important to wear sunglasses on sunny days when driving.

The most important aspect of sunglasses is that they keep UV rays away from the eyes. UV rays can damage the cornea, retina and lens. Although humans have a certain amount of natural protection against the effects of UV rays through the constriction of the pupils, blinking and the shading effect of eyebrows and eyelashes, this protection is not sufficient for prolonged exposure to intense sunlight.

Especially in areas with a lot of sunlight, by the sea, in high mountains and in snow, the eyes must also be protected with sunglasses. The higher you go in the mountains, the thinner the atmosphere becomes. The radiation increases by 20% for every 1000 metres of altitude. If there is also snow, which reflects the sun's rays, special care is required. Snow reflects the incident UV rays by up to 100%, sand by up to 80% and running water by around 50%.

Exposure to the sun is often underestimated. Although you should wear sunglasses, especially in sunny holiday destinations, UV rays can cause red eyes, pain, irritation, itching and blurred vision even at your local quarry pond. The discomfort in the eyes often only occurs a few hours after being in the sun. Anyone experiencing severe symptoms should take care of their eyes and see a doctor.

What damage can UV rays cause to the eyes?

Frequent unprotected exposure to intense sunlight increases the risk of late damage to the inside of the eye. The damage often goes unnoticed at first and accumulates over the years. This can cause typical age-related conditions such as clouding of the lens (cataracts) or retinal damage. In the worst case, the photoreceptors are destroyed at the point of sharpest vision, resulting in visual impairment.

What are the best sunglasses?

The frame provides protection from the sun's rays entering from the side and from above. The larger the frame of the sunglasses, the more light protection they provide. The sunglasses should fit as close to the face as possible and reach up to the eyebrows. The wider the temples or the further the lenses are curved to the side, the more additional protection there is against the sun's rays entering from the side.

Every pair of sunglasses offers a certain degree of protection from the sun's rays, regardless of the tint of the lenses. Even clear lenses filter the light. Anyone who has ever tried to get tanned arms through the window panes in a car will have realised that this has little effect. However, the tint of the sunglasses regulates light absorption and glare protection. The filter effect is divided into five levels. Level 4 sunglasses have the strongest sun filter, but level 4 sunglasses are only suitable for high mountains and are not permitted in road traffic. Very dark glasses with a low UV filter are particularly bad for the eyes, as they reduce the incidence of light and cause the pupils to dilate. This allows more unfiltered rays to reach the eye.

Good sunglasses filter sunlight of different wavelengths. Unfortunately, many cheap sunglasses carry this label because there is no monitoring. It is therefore safer to buy branded glasses from a specialist shop.

What do coloured sunglasses do?

There are brown, grey, green, blue, yellow, orange or red sunglasses lenses. Brown lenses distort the colours of the surroundings the least and are therefore best suited for everyday wear and holidays. Cyclists and golfers like to use glasses with a yellowish or orange tint, as these intensify the contrasts.

Blue or green lenses reduce the contrast.

The stages of sunglasses

Level 0: up to 20% light absorption, light light protection

Level 1: up to 57% light absorption, light protection for overcast days

Level 2: up to 82% light absorption, light protection for the Central European summer

Level 3: up to 92% light absorption, light protection for southern countries, water surfaces, beaches and low mountain ranges

Level 4: up to 97% light absorption, very dark filter for high mountains and glacier regions

Sunglasses are much more than fashionable chic and are not just for reducing blinking in bright sunlight.
